Designer or Content Manager?
There are many ways to implement a website these days. You can choose between dedicated software, writing core code or use ready-made templates and content management software.
To choose the right way to go, you need to decide on what you would like to achieve. The methods are diverse, but PLC School and Training Centre focus on two main areas - core code and content management systems (also know as CMS software).
The following explains the difference and will help to decide the best learning option for you.
1 - I want to learn how to write the code that makes a website work (core code)
2 - I just want to get a ready-made website I can update myself (CMS)
Core HTML Code and CSS
You will learn how the code is put together to make a web page what it is - a web page. You will also learn how to link everything together and make web pages into websites. This is more involved than using ready-made websites and is designed to give you a fundamental and deep understanding of how the core code is put together (html and cascading style sheets or 'CSS').
Beginners can learn the terms and code structure for design and layout from step one. No previous knowledge is required and you will get results right away. You can slowly build your knowledge at your own pace and gain a good understanding of how websites are put together and the format and styling techniques available.
More advanced students can add to their existing knowledge to build professional websites with code that will validate to the latest internet standards.
Please note:
PLC School and Training Centre does not teach web design software such as Adobe Dreamweaver.
Why Not?
The aim of the course is to familiarize you with the core code and how it works. This makes understanding software and code output much easier to control and understand once you progress to using software for production and design.
Software applications normally come with a whole range of tutorials and help files which you can use and learn from but you should remember that in this case you are learning how to use specific software. Understanding the core code and how it works is a big advantage in getting the results you want and debugging any problems and is highly recommended.
Content Management Systems
I want a website and I want it now!
Okay, a Content Management System (CMS) will give you just that. You don't need to understand any code at all and you can update the content yourself without any knowledge of website design.
In this case, you simply install a ready-made website and add your content via online admin. There are normally a selection of ready made templates and styles to choose from and adding your logo and branding is relatively easy to do.
Most CMS applications come with a whole array of extras and plug-ins to give you an easy way to add polls, image galleries, user log-ins, social network additions, third party advertising and much more.
The course at PLC School and Training Centre takes you through everything from install to customization. Beginners can learn how to set-up a new site from scratch. Once you are more advanced, you can move on to managing your content, search engine optimization, adding new features and the more advanced features.
NOTE: if the intention is to install for commercial use or for a personal website you should purchase your own domain name and hosting. We can take you through this process and the options and features to look out for but highly recommend that you ensure CMS is suitable for your particular needs and you are ready to manage content before you release anything online.
