What is TEFL?

TEFL is an acronym for: Teaching English as a Foreign Language

It’s a structured training program that acts as a stepping stone to teaching English as a foreign language. A TEFL certificate tells employers that you have gone through the theory and practice involved in teaching English to non-native speakers. It doesn’t make you a qualified English teacher, or act as a licence to teach, but it does give you the opportunity to teach English as a Foreign Language in private or Government schools on a long term basis in Thailand. You can also travel and teach - a TEFL certificate is a standard accepted worldwide.

Qualification and Grading

The TEFL course at PLC School and Training Centre is based on the requirements and course structure of a full TEFL course and is a mix of theory and teaching practice in the classroom with students. The course includes an extra Thai Language and Culture module which is a requirement stipulated by the Thai Ministry of Education for any teacher wanting to teach in Thailand.

All trainees participating in the course are monitored and supported with feedback and given help with any weak areas. There is a final assessment and all trainees are graded in terms of each particular subject and there is a pass or fail standard.

The certificate is issued by PLC School and Training Centre under a license issued by the Thai Ministry of Education.

Who is TEFL for?

Previous teaching experience is not a requirement. If you have an interest in passing on knowledge, want to achieve, improve yourself and others, have a sense of fun and get along with all kinds of people - then it’s for YOU.

Oops! English isn’t my first language...

If you have the ability to speak and write English fluently then you can take the course - you don’t need to be a native speaker. You will learn techniques to help you put together great lessons to give you both confidence in your teaching and assurance that you’re giving students value.

Not sure about my own grammar!

Don’t worry - this is a common concern. You will learn how course books, lesson plans and other techniques can help you through the early stages. If you combine a little practice and experience with self improvement you’ll develop and eventually get to know grammar and other areas of language very well.

Career prospects, age and wages...

Like any profession, experience and age play a large part in the options open to you. Age shouldn’t put you off - both young people and the more mature have a good chance of gaining employment. Schools full of lively learners and business English schools are looking for both ends of the age spectrum.

If you’re not a native speaker you may need to work that little bit harder to prove your skills to potential employers, but the right attitude and approach can often get you that lucky break - enthusiasm and people skills are always welcome.

Wages will depend on the kind of school, your experience and the area of Thailand you want to work in. Government schools start at around 25,000 to 35,000 Thai Baht per month for a teacher with experience, working up to very good rates for something like business English in Bangkok. The internet is a great resource for the latest vacancies and pay scales.
